For many, it will probably always be Saigon, the former capital of South Vietnam before the north and south were reunited in the dramatic events which ended America's military involvement in Southeast Asia.

Saigon was not a very significant city until it was captured by the French in 1859. The French made Saigon the capital of their colony of Cochinchina, and later, all of Indochina. Much of what there is to see in Ho Chi Minh City today dates from the French administration.

Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat international airport (code: SGN) is the main gateway to Vietnam for flights arriving from other countries. Most major international airlines fly to the city. A new international terminal was opened in September 2007, significantly upgrading the services available for the increasing number of people visiting Vietnam on business and pleasure.

For more information about what to see and do around the city, see the Asia for Visitors Guide to Ho Chi Minh City.
