Manado's small airport is amazingly busy, and more surprisingly, international flights account for a big portion of the traffic. Most of the people are coming to explore the undersea delights of the Bunaken Marine Park, just offshore from Manado. For more information about the diving opportunities, see the SEA Undersea guide to North Sulawesi.
The airport is on just two levels. Baggage claim and departure check-in are side-by-side on the ground level, while departures are on the second floor. For international passengers, immigration is on the second floor as well.
The terminal was opened in 2001, and features large stained glass windows. While the themes are ecumenical, the windows certainly recall the heavily Christian population of Manado.
The airport is named for Dr Sam Ratulangi, a native of Northern Sulawesi, educator and independence hero.
