Thai AirAsia Adds Mandalay

More news from AirAsia: They just announced plans to start flying between Bangkok and Mandalay, commencing 4 October 2012. That’s just three days after the budget airline makes their move back to Don Muang International Airport.

Although Mandalay has a large relatively new airport, the last time I visited the lights were off in most of the building, which was less than a quarter used. The move by Thai AirAsia is a sign of the growing acceptance of Myanmar / Burma as part of the Southeast Asian travel market.

AirAsia Acquires Batavia Air

Budget behemoth AirAsia is in the news again. It has just been announced that the airline has agreed to acquire Indonesia’s Batavia Air. This is AirAsia’s first ever acquisition, and probably underlines the importance of the Indonesian market, where the airline has been lagging behind local players such as Lion Air. Singapore’s Budget Terminal Closing

Changi Airport has announced that the Budget Terminal will close on 25 September 2012. All airlines currently using the terminal will be moved to Terminal 2. The closure is to make way for a new Terminal 4, which will offer a slightly more upscale experience for budget airlines.

The new terminal is expected to be completed in 2017. Airlines affected by the move are Berjaya Air, Cebu Pacific, Firefly, South East Asian Airlines and Tiger Airways.
