In Transit – Vientiane

Although I’ve visited Vientiane three or four times now, this is my first time using the airport. I usually fly into Udorn Thani in Thailand and then cross the Friendship Bridge. But now I’m flying from Vientiane to Luang Prabang via Lao Airlines.

Vientiane has a nice shiny new terminal building, but although it appears to be greatly under-utilized, it’s only used for international flights. Domestic flights still use the old terminal building. The first impression of the domestic terminal is of a very UN-charming place. In fact, I was reminded of a provincial bus station rather than a modern airline terminal. There are precious few facilities, so it’s a good thing our flight is not delayed [too much].

Luang Prabang’s tiny airport isn’t much better, but at least there’s no nicer-looking new terminal taunting you (not yet, anyway, there are signs of new construction getting started). Since more international western travelers are likely to use the gateway to this world heritage site, I’ve added a new guide to Luang Prabang Airport.

Garuda Eyes USA

It seems that Indonesian national carrier Garuda is planning a big comeback. According to Bali Discovery, the airline is awaiting delivery of 10 Boeing 777-200 ER aircraft, which will enable it to fly to North America. The airline went through a rough patch several years ago, cultivating in being banned from flying in European airspace, as part of a blanket ban on all Indonesian airlines. It probably didn’t deserve to be lumped in with the likes of Adam Air, but it did take the action as a wake-up call to get its maintenance processes certified by an international agency and update its fleet.

I’ve been flying Garuda domestic flights several times a year for the past five years, and I have to say they aren’t all that bad. They have a long way to go to rival the likes of Singapore Airlines, but I’ve been on domestic full-fare flights in the US that were worse.

Be that as it may, I somehow doubt “It’s not as bad as you think” is going to be their new slogan for the US market.

Bangkok Airport Link Update

Things have been rather quiet lately regarding the new airport train service. A little too quiet, if you know what I mean. It seemed like there was another shoe to drop, and that feeling was confirmed by today’s Bangkok Post. It seems there are a few little details, like a power supply, that aren’t done yet, so the whole project is delayed yet again. While there was talk of service starting in April, it now seems unlikely to be ready until August.
