In August of 2008, Makassar opened it's all new airport terminal at the city's Hasanuddin Airport, significantly upgrading the facilities and services available at the airport. The shiny new airport has lots of space, but its opening was a bit rushed, so a lot of shops weren't complete when I first visited. However, on my last visit in 2010 everything was much different, and there were lots of shops and services to occupy me on a long layover. There are still empty shops, but that's because the airport was probably over-designed, and traffic hasn't yet caught up to capacity.

The new terminal is much larger than the old cramped building. The large roomy departure hall is capped by a soaring undulating roof. While it's all modern steel and glass, there's still something of a retro feel to it, with the steel trusses supporting the roof reminding me of the old Dutch railroad bridges dotted around the country.

The terminal is basically on two levels, with check-in and baggage claim side-by-side on the ground floor, and the departure gates on the second. There are six gates in all, each with its own skybridge. Most flights will use the bridges, but some airlines park on the tarmac and use buses to load and unload passengers.
