Garuda is the national carrier of Indonesia. Although it has a not entirely undeserved reputation for poor service, Garuda is not really a 'bad' airline, and advice against using it is a bit alarmist. While Garuda is unlikely to make the list of the world's top ten airlines any time soon, it's a long way from being on the worst list. I make four to six domestic flights a year on the airline.
Garuda's route network is probably the most extensive of the domestic carriers. Their international network extends through most of Asia and the Middle East. If you're planning a trip to Indonesia, Garuda is probably your best bet for domestic air travel. However, you may experience some problems booking tickets with Garuda on-line. Due to rampant credit card fraud in Indonesia, it can be difficult booking with a non-Indonesian credit card on-line, and only Visa and Mastercard are accepted in any event. If you want to confirm your domestic travel plans before you arrive in Indonesia, you may need to visit a travel agent to get the bookings made.
On board, economy class seating on domestic flights is not generous, but adequate. I haven't have my knees crushed, but I do have to watch out for the guy in front of me putting his seat back. If you're extra-tall, try getting to the airport early to score a seat in the exit row. Flights lasting less than two hours will get a boxed stack of a bun or two and some water. Longer flights generally get a hot meal, which I would say is usually above average for airline food.
Garuda has it's own frequent flier program, but is not part of any global alliance.
