Expanded Guide to Kuala Lumpur Low Cost Carrier Terminal

Driven by the budget juggernaut Air Asia, Kuala Lumpur’s low cost carrier terminal (LCCT) continues to expand. It now appears to be the largest low cost terminal in Southeast Asia, with a capacity that probably outstrips most other airports in the region. It’s not ‘pretty’ but like the budget airlines themselves, it gets the job done. Since the low cost terminal is like a separate airport unto itself, I’ve create a complete guide to the LCCT.

Big Changes at KLIA

It’s been a long time since I was here, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The last time I was flying out of KL, it was on Air Asia, so I was at the decidedly different low cost carrier terminal. The main terminal building is still vast and airy. They’re doing a little bit of work here and there in the main terminal, and a lot of changes are under way in the satellite terminal, where almost half of the shops are closed for remodeling.

Other than that, the 10 year old airport is wearing well. There’s no sign of any big expansion – the master plan obviously has room for a second satellite concourse – but KLIA always seems under-utilized to me anyway. It seems that focus is shifting on development around the airport, creating a proper "aeropolis" similar to Amsterdam’s Schipol airport.

Kuala Lumpur to Get New Low Cost Terminal

Several papers are carrying news reports that the Malaysian government has agreed to build a new low cost terminal at KLIA. The new terminal will replace the existing low cost carrier terminal (LCCT), which despite expansion is bursting at the seams, due to the rapid expansion of its main user, Air Asia.

The new terminal will be completed in 2011, and unlike the current LCCT, it will be connected to the express train to the city, making it much more convenient. It will be able to handle up to 30 Million passengers a year, a big improvement over the 10 Million the current LCCT can handle. The airport will also build a third runway to further increase the overall capacity of KLIA.

The announcement appears to signal the end of a long-running dispute between Air Asia and the government over inaction on the airport expansion.
